Our research group has been investigating gut microbial communities associated with Brazilian aquatic and semi-aquatic herbivores to understand how these underexplored microbial assemblages cope with complex dietary glycans to thrive in this diverse and densely populated ecosystem. By employing state-of-the-art metagenomics, combining short and long reads along with bioinformatics approaches, we unveil the taxonomic and functional diversity of these microbial communities, highlighting their adaptive strategies and symbiotic relationships with their hosts. Furthermore, we combine biochemical and synchrotron-based techniques to investigate novel enzymatic systems with potential for sustainable and innovative biotechnological solutions.
